Wayfarer

Solo Exhibition
Orange Project, Bacolod City Philippines

Marking his first solo exhibition after ten years, Dary Feril reckons with a lifetime of artistic and personal journeying in Wayfarer. The title refers to traveling, often on foot, and suggests a sense of unhurriedness and depth in making one’s way through the world. The artist deploys this to allude to a biographical milieu distinctly itinerant in character, foregrounded in this show that is at once a celebration of his creative practice and a reckoning of his childhood.

Across the gallery, Feril’s works trace the decades-long progression of his artmaking. Beginning as a digital illustrator and designer for commercial clients, he initially sought to distinguish this from his visual arts practice, believing himself not yet qualified for the latter. His first artworks, consequently, were markedly stripped of color in an effort to distance them from the vibrant palette of his commercial pieces. Yet from small graphite works constituting his earliest body of work, he gradually gathered courage to foray into color and scale—culminating in this present series of large acrylic paintings that demonstrate his recent explorations with color.

At the same time, the exhibition reflects on a childhood shaped by displacement. In his youth, Feril frequently moved from one city to another, and the absence of a permanent home gave rise to crises of identity and belonging—feelings of guardedness that surface in the collection’s subjects. Drawing from memories of these constant moves, his works evoke a sense of obscurity that mirrors his emotional response to a life marked by continual departures.

Amid all these shifts, whether in his creative or personal trajectory, Wayfarer emerges as a point of grounding. It is likewise a homecoming to Bacolod—his birthplace before a youth marked by wandering—and to Orange Project, where he now stages his first solo exhibition in the gallery. In the persistent unfolding of his path as an artist and individual, Daryl Feril signifies his readiness to embrace all that has shaped, and will shape, his way of being in the world.
